Many of my clients are entrepreneurs seeking a more sophisticated portrait to represent their business and personal brand. A glorified head shot, so to speak. Sophisticated not meaning stuffy, sophisticated meaning the quick cell phone selfie is just not going to cut it anymore.
Think about the last time you posted a portrait of yourself on your personal facebook page. What happened? I can bet that it exploded with comments and likes. Why not do the same with your business page? People want to see who they are working with. You are your brand.
Does your image on your website, linked in profile or facebook page say anything about who you really are or what you are interested in. Is it the impression you really want to leave people with? In the last few months I have been photographing entrepreneurs and corporate men and women who were simply looking for portraits that make them look approachable, competent, experts in their field and just plain good. The suit and tie head shots will always have a purpose in corporate america, but in addition to the traditional headshot, it’s time to think out of the box and step it up. How often do we see real estate agents with the same boring headshot on their business card. A headshot can be glorified and still have a style of its own. Below are some before and after photos of professionals who chose to step it up.
Meet Aurelia Myles. Aurelia actually won my services at a fundraising event in NYC. When she called me she was a little nervous. Like most of us, we are not runway models and find having our photos taken uncomfortable. After chatting with her and finding out how she wanted to use her images, we scheduled a date and time. We met in Manhattan and she showed up with make-up on, a simple floral dress and a red dress that she was not sure if we should use. Check out the images we captured of Aurelia below. Stunning! No make-up artist, no stylist. Just me, my camera and Aurelia. Imagine if I did not convince her to put that red dress on. I think we captured a little bit of everything.

I was asked to take headshots of the coaches at Synergy Education Inc in NYC. Their request was approachable, friendly yet professional. What I want people to realize is that professional does not mean standing in front of a backdrop with a jacket and tie. Here, although dressed professionally, the location and the lighting added a contemporary feel to the images. Sal Agnello from North Star Wealth Advisors, decided to update his website. He simply needed a professional looking portrait that represented the industry he works in and would complement the new look of his website. Since his office is in Huntington NY, right near me I decided to meet him at his office and shoot his photos right outside his front door. The before image was a profile pic that he used on facebook at one time. Now he gets to choose from a handful of great shots.
Personal Coach Kerry Turner called me and said “now is the time, I put this off for so long!” Since Kerry is a personal coach and finds peace at the beach, she wanted her session at a specific location. She put thought into her personal brand and had the photos represent what she does and also took her logo into consideration when choosing the tops she wanted to wear. Check Kerry Turner Coaching out on facebook to see how she used her images to compliment her brand.
Actress and coach Sally Stewart had a request from her agent to update her headshots. It’s incredible, after posting the after shot below, the one image generated 157 comments and over 600 likes. Why not use images of yourself to increase your brand identity? I am going to try this for myself and will get back to you with my results.
